Bio and Process
Thank you for your interest in my work! I've been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. I studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and graduated in 2006 with a BFA in Painting. Since then, I’ve done a broad range of paintings---murals, portraits of people as well as pets, abstract expression, landscapes, and more. I live and work in Gainesville, Georgia, located about 45 minutes north of Atlanta. I’ve had creative influences my whole life by my wildly artistic mother Margaret, as well as by my writer father, Taylor. I inherited from both of them a love of reading, learning and artistic expression. I’m also a proud mother to my 3-year old son Jack, who’s inspired me in endless ways to enjoy life, create more art, and cherish each day more than ever before.
My painting influences come from all over the place and may change with a whim (it depends on what I’m reading and feeling), but my heroes are Celily Brown, Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler, William deKooning, Pollock and Van Gogh. I am inspired by elements of nature such as tree forms and sunsets, science, and the passage of time. In my new work, I’m most interested in color relationships and expressive mark-making, utilizing a multimedia, layered approach. There is no formal plan but there is a process, where I move between intuitive marks, controlled splashes, and edits. The painting has a life of its own, and my favorite works are the ones that just seem to happen, when I'm free from expectations and am able to let the painting flow spontaneously. Looking back at each work, I reflect on the specific and memorable creative adventure as well as pieces of my life experience brought to the canvas.
